Aspirin , enteric-coated, baby, and plain aspirin or any other product containing aspirin. In some cases, we may recommend stopping your aspirin 1 week before surgery. In others cases, low-dose aspirin may be continued based on your medical condition.

Please be aware that many drugs and herbal products may be anticoagulants blood thinners although they are not used for that purpose. Drugs in this group include some anti-depressants and most anti-Parkinson drugs.

MAOIs can interfere with many of the medications used during anesthesia. If the medication needs to be stopped, it should be done one to two weeks days before surgery because it takes that long for the drug to be out of your system. You should discuss this with your surgeon and primary physician as early as possible. Insulin may be given in a reduced dose. The lists in this handout are not complete. Other products or supplements may also cause bleeding problems.

Important note for patients who have had cardiac stents or other heart surgery in the past year:.
