They work. They glow. Look for that clip. The TAD set has that clip too. A new, old-stock valve, either European, American or Japanese doesn't cost much more. The Japanese Matshushita, Toshiba valves are quite spectacular in comparison and thanks to snobbery, can be had for peanuts.
Power valves. The small price difference pays dividends in terms of the sound. Matched output valves? Matched phase inverter? I'm still undecided about the preamp tubes, though. I just read this first post and found it very helpful Posts: 3, Tesla hand tests all his tubes, can't beat the quality, hard to find though BobbyZ likes this. Mar 19, Apr 5, I finally got some things to report. On this amp, you really have to turn the volume up to o'clock to get it to sound right. Anything below 3 and the tone is thinner with a sort of screechy and annoying high end. I also decided to replace all of the preamp tubes.
Being that I got this amp used, I have no way of knowing the age of the preamp tubes that were in there for all I know the previous owner stuck his oldest tubes in there when he decided to sell it.
Also, the V1 tube is unmarked breathing on it didn't reveal any markings. As for V1, I got three different tubes. All three boast low microphonics.
